Proton Mail and Proton Drive pricing is easy to misunderstand because Proton sells them in two ways. You can buy some services separately, but Proton also pushes bundle plans that combine Mail, Drive, VPN, Pass, Calendar, Wallet and other privacy tools under one account.
So the first correction is important: Proton Mail and Proton Drive are sold separately in the sense that Mail Plus and Drive Plus exist as separate paid plans. However, the best value for many people is often Proton Unlimited, Duo or Family, because those bundle the premium versions of several Proton services together.
That means the right plan depends on what you actually want. If you only need private email, Mail Plus is the cleanest choice. If you only need encrypted cloud storage, Drive Plus is the direct choice. If you want both Mail and Drive, or you also want Proton VPN and Proton Pass, Proton Unlimited usually becomes the sensible plan.

Current Proton Plan Structure
Proton Free gives access to the Proton ecosystem without payment: one email address, basic Mail storage, free Proton Drive storage up to 5GB after completing Drive setup steps, Proton Docs, limited Proton VPN, Proton Pass Free, Proton Wallet Free and other free-level tools. It’s a good trial route, but not a serious long-term plan for heavy Mail or Drive use.
Proton Mail Plus is the paid email-focused plan, including 15GB of storage shared with Proton Drive, up to 10 email addresses, one custom email domain, unlimited folders and labels, Mail Bridge, contact groups, auto-reply, catch-all email, Easy Switch import, password-protected emails, priority support, dark web monitoring, and 10 hide-my-email aliases.
Proton Drive Plus is the paid storage-focused plan, with 200GB of encrypted cloud storage for files, photos and documents, online document and spreadsheet editing, and previous file version recovery.
Proton Unlimited is the main single-user bundle, including 500GB shared between Mail and Drive, premium Mail features, Proton VPN Plus, Proton Pass, Proton Calendar, Proton Wallet and Proton Sentinel. Proton Duo is the two-user bundle, with 2TB of storage shared between two users, premium Proton services, and 30 email addresses. Proton Family is the household plan, supporting up to six users, 3TB of storage, 90 email addresses, and premium Proton services for the family group.
Which Plan Is Best for Private Email Only?
Choose Proton Mail Plus if your main goal is private email. It’s the right plan for a single person who wants a serious Proton Mail setup without paying for the full Proton ecosystem, the key features are the 15GB storage allowance, 10 email addresses, one custom domain, Mail Bridge, unlimited folders and labels, and priority support.
This is the plan to choose for someone moving away from Gmail or Outlook but not yet ready to move their cloud storage, VPN and password manager, also sensible for a writer, freelancer, student or professional who wants a private inbox with a custom domain. The biggest reason to skip Mail Plus is if you also want Proton VPN or more Drive storage, in which case Proton Unlimited quickly becomes more attractive.
Which Plan Is Best for Encrypted Cloud Storage Only?
Choose Proton Drive Plus if your main goal is encrypted cloud storage and 200GB is enough. Drive Plus is the cleanest option for someone who wants to store documents, photos and files privately without buying the whole Proton suite, it includes Proton Drive, Proton Docs, Proton Sheets, previous file versions, and 200GB of storage.
This is a good plan for private documents, financial records, family photos, identity scans and secure file sharing. It’s less ideal for people who need terabytes of storage or who want premium Mail and VPN features, once you want more than one major Proton product, the bundle becomes easier to justify.
Which Plan Is Best if You Want Mail and Drive Together?
For most people who want both Mail and Drive, Proton Unlimited is the best plan. Mail Plus gives you private email and 15GB shared with Drive; Drive Plus gives you 200GB storage; Proton Unlimited gives you 500GB shared between Mail and Drive, plus premium Mail, VPN, Pass, Calendar and other tools. It costs more than either single service, but usually costs less than building a similar privacy setup from separate providers.
This is especially true if you were already considering a VPN, Proton VPN Plus is a strong product on its own, and when it’s included in Unlimited, the bundle becomes much more compelling. Choose Unlimited if you want one account for email, cloud storage, VPN, aliases, passwords and calendar; avoid it if you only want one narrow feature and won’t use the rest.
Which Plan Is Best for Couples?
For two people, Proton Duo is the natural plan to compare, giving two users access to the premium Proton ecosystem with 2TB of shared storage.
Duo makes sense for couples, partners, close family members, or two-person households who both want private email, secure cloud storage, VPN and password management, simpler than managing two separate Proton Unlimited accounts and with more total storage. However, Duo only makes sense if both people will actually use it; if one person is serious about Proton and the other only needs a free email address, Unlimited plus a free account may be cheaper.
Which Plan Is Best for Families?
For households, Proton Family is the plan to consider, covering up to six users with 3TB of shared storage and giving everyone access to Proton’s premium privacy tools.
This is best for families who want to move email, storage, VPN and password management away from Google, Apple or Microsoft, it can also work for small informal groups, although businesses should compare Proton’s business plans instead. On a per-person basis, Family can be excellent value if several people use it; if only one or two people will use it properly, Duo or Unlimited is usually the better buy.
Monthly vs Annual Pricing
Annual pricing is normally the better value for Proton Mail and Proton Drive, Proton’s support pages list lower monthly-equivalent prices when billed yearly, and its sale pages often focus on longer billing periods.
Monthly billing is useful for testing, letting you try a paid plan without committing for a full year. But if you’re moving your main inbox or cloud storage, you’re probably not making a one-month decision, email and cloud storage are long-term services, so once you know Proton works for you, annual billing is usually more sensible. The one caution is migration: don’t commit a whole household or business before testing the workflow, try the apps, import a sample mailbox, sync files, test Drive sharing, check Mail Bridge if you need desktop email, and confirm the storage limits are enough.
When Does Proton Go on Sale?
The best Proton sale period is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Proton’s own Black Friday pages describe this as the time for its seasonal deals, with discounts across Proton VPN, Mail, Drive, Pass and bundle plans, usually running around late November and extending into Cyber Monday.
Other sale windows can happen, Proton has run bundle promotions outside Black Friday, and deal pages may appear around major software shopping periods. But Black Friday remains the sale window worth watching most closely.
Should You Wait for Black Friday?
If it’s October or November, waiting for Black Friday is sensible, Proton’s biggest public discounts are usually around that period, and Mail, Drive, VPN, Pass, Unlimited, Duo and Family may all be included in some form.
If it’s early in the year and you’re ready to move your email or cloud storage now, don’t automatically wait months, the value of moving away from a provider you don’t trust may be worth more than a future discount, especially if you’re moving sensitive documents, using a custom domain, or replacing several paid services with Proton Unlimited. The best compromise: use Proton Free to test the ecosystem, then upgrade during a strong sale if you’re not in a hurry.
Storage Bonuses
Proton also offers annual storage bonuses on many paid plans. Proton says paid Proton plans, except Drive Professional, Pass Plus and paid-VPN-only plans, can earn extra storage each year, with listed annual bonuses on Mail Plus, Drive Plus, Unlimited, Duo and Family. This doesn’t replace comparing base storage, but it does make long-term Proton use more attractive, since your storage allowance can grow over time on a continuously renewed paid plan.
Verdict
The best Proton plan depends on how much of the ecosystem you want. Choose Mail Plus if you only want private email. Choose Drive Plus if you only want 200GB of encrypted cloud storage. Choose Proton Unlimited if you want Mail and Drive together, or if you also want VPN and Pass. Choose Duo if two people want the full Proton suite. Choose Family if up to six people will actively use Proton services.
The most important buying rule is not to compare Proton only by storage capacity, it’s rarely the cheapest way to buy raw gigabytes. Its value is privacy, encryption, clean business incentives, and the convenience of one ecosystem for email, files, passwords, VPN and calendar. For a single UK reader who wants both Proton Mail and Proton Drive, Proton Unlimited is usually the plan to recommend first. For a narrow use case, buy the narrow plan; for a full privacy shift, buy the bundle.
