Proton Drive

Overview

Proton Drive is Proton’s private cloud storage service. It’s built for people who want the convenience of Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud or OneDrive, but without handing the contents of their files to a company that can scan, profile, advertise against, or train artificial intelligence systems on their data.

That’s the heart of Proton Drive, it isn’t trying to win purely by offering the most storage for the lowest possible monthly price. It’s trying to offer cloud storage where privacy is the default. Files, folders, file names, folder names, thumbnails, and shared links are protected with end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption, in simple terms, Proton shouldn’t be able to open your files, inspect the names of your documents, or browse your photo library.

Proton Drive is now a serious privacy-focused cloud storage option, especially for people already interested in Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Pass or Proton Unlimited. It’s still not as mature as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive for broad office workflows, third-party integrations, and business collaboration at scale, but for private file storage, secure sharing, photo backup, encrypted documents, and a more trustworthy alternative to Big Tech cloud storage, it’s become much easier to recommend.

What Is Proton Drive?

Proton Drive is an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage platform from Proton, the Swiss privacy company best known for Proton Mail and Proton VPN. It lets you store files, back up photos, create and edit documents, work with spreadsheets, sync files across devices, and share files securely with other people.

A free Proton account includes 5GB of Proton Drive storage after completing the Drive getting-started steps. Paid plans increase that storage, with Drive Plus offering 200GB, Proton Unlimited offering 500GB shared across Mail and Drive, Proton Duo offering 2TB for two users, and Proton Family offering 3TB for up to six users.

The product has changed a lot over the last few years. Early Proton Drive felt like a secure vault first and a mainstream cloud drive second, that’s no longer the full picture. Proton has added desktop sync, mobile apps, photo backup, Proton Docs, Proton Sheets, encrypted file sharing, version history on paid plans, and faster uploads and downloads through its newer Drive SDK and cryptography updates. The result is a service that can now replace mainstream cloud storage for many privacy-conscious users, although not every Google Drive or Microsoft 365 user will be ready to switch completely.

Security and Encryption

The main reason to choose Proton Drive is encryption. Proton Drive protects files with end-to-end encryption, meaning encryption happens before files are uploaded, only you and the people you choose to share with should be able to access them.

This is different from ordinary cloud storage. With many mainstream services, files are encrypted in transit and at rest, but the provider can still technically access the contents, allowing features such as server-side search, image recognition, document indexing, compliance scanning, advertising profiling, or AI training. It also means a company could be compelled to hand over readable content if it has access to it.

Proton Drive takes a different approach. Proton says it cannot access your files, folders, file names, folder names, thumbnail previews, or shared links without permission, important because metadata can be revealing. A file called “passport scan”, “divorce documents” or “tax return” may disclose sensitive information even if the file content itself is encrypted. This is one of the areas where Proton Drive is stronger than many casual secure cloud claims, it’s designed to reduce what Proton itself can see, not just encrypt file contents while leaving the surrounding structure exposed.

File Storage and Sync

Proton Drive works through web access, desktop apps and mobile apps. On desktop, the expected workflow is simple: you add files to your Proton Drive folder and they sync to the encrypted cloud. On mobile, you can browse stored files, upload documents, and use photo backup.

The experience is clean and approachable, if you already know how to use OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive, Proton Drive won’t feel alien. Privacy tools often fail because they ask normal users to behave like security engineers; Proton Drive mostly avoids that problem.

Performance has also improved. Proton announced major Drive performance work in 2026, including faster uploads, faster downloads, smoother apps, and faster encryption and decryption, important because encryption adds work to every upload and download, and a private cloud drive that feels slow every day will see people stop using it. Proton still has more to prove on long-term reliability at huge scale, but the direction is clearly better than it was.

Photo Backup

Photo backup is one of Proton Drive’s most important features. Photos are among the most sensitive files most people own, they show faces, locations, homes, children, documents, receipts, travel, health moments and personal relationships, and also contain metadata that can reveal where and when an image was taken.

Proton Drive lets users back up photos from Android and iOS with end-to-end encryption, aiming to give people the convenience of cloud photo backup without handing their private image library to an advertising or AI company. This is one of the strongest everyday reasons to use Proton Drive, a secure document vault is useful, but most people don’t create sensitive PDFs every day; they do take photos every day.

The main trade-off is that Proton’s photo features are still catching up with the very advanced search, memories, face grouping, smart albums and editing features in mainstream photo platforms, the privacy benefit is stronger, but the consumer photo convenience is still less developed.

Proton Docs and Proton Sheets

Proton Drive now includes Proton Docs and Proton Sheets, giving it a stronger productivity angle, Proton Docs is a private document editor, and Proton Sheets is Proton’s spreadsheet tool, both designed to bring familiar office-style editing into the encrypted Drive environment.

This matters because cloud storage is no longer just about dumping files in folders, people expect to create, edit and share documents in the browser, and Proton is trying to build a private alternative to Google Docs and Microsoft 365, where the provider cannot inspect the contents of the work. For basic document writing, notes, private drafts, family documents and many personal tasks, Proton Docs is already useful; Proton Sheets adds another piece for budgets, lists, planning and simple spreadsheet work.

However, this is also one of the areas where Proton still has ground to cover, Google Docs and Microsoft Office are mature, deeply integrated and widely adopted. If your work relies on complex spreadsheet functions, macros, large team workflows, plugins, templates or advanced formatting, Proton’s tools may feel limited. For privacy-first documents, it’s compelling; for full office replacement, it depends on your needs.

File Sharing

Proton Drive supports secure file sharing through links and email-based sharing, you can share files and folders while keeping the underlying content protected. Paid users can add stronger sharing controls, including password-protected links, expiration dates, and the ability to revoke access.

This is useful for sensitive documents: legal paperwork, financial documents, identity scans, family photos, medical information, work drafts, contracts, or anything you wouldn’t want sitting in an ordinary public link. Secure sharing doesn’t need to be complicated, Proton Drive lets you share in a familiar way while adding privacy controls, which for non-technical users is exactly the right approach.

The Bundle Advantage

Proton Drive is strongest when seen as part of the Proton ecosystem. Proton Unlimited gives one user Mail, Calendar, Drive, VPN, Pass, Wallet and other Proton features under one account; Duo and Family extend that idea to two or more people.

This changes the value calculation. If you only compare Proton Drive with Google One or iCloud on storage per pound, Proton can look expensive. But if you compare Proton Unlimited with buying a private email service, VPN, password manager, encrypted drive and alias tool separately, it becomes far more attractive. Proton Drive shouldn’t be judged as a commodity storage bucket, it isn’t the cheapest way to store 2TB of random files, it’s a privacy product that happens to include cloud storage.

Advantages

• Privacy: end-to-end encryption and zero-access design reduce the trust you need to place in the provider.
• Encrypted metadata: file names, folder names, thumbnails and shared links being protected is a meaningful improvement over services that only encrypt file contents.
• The wider Proton bundle: fits naturally alongside Proton Mail, Proton VPN or Proton Pass.
• Simplicity: much easier to use than manually encrypting files before uploading them to ordinary cloud storage.
• Steady development: Docs, Sheets, photo backup, better sharing, faster performance and continuing platform improvements.

Disadvantages

• Price per gigabyte: not the cheapest cloud storage service if you only care about raw storage capacity.
• Maturity: Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and iCloud are more established for collaboration, integrations and polished platform behaviour.
• Office compatibility: Proton Docs and Sheets are useful, but not yet full replacements for every advanced Microsoft Office or Google Workspace workflow.
• Ecosystem commitment: more compelling with several Proton products, but that means moving more of your digital life into one provider.
• Privacy limits some convenience: encrypted services can’t always offer the same server-side search, image recognition and smart automation as mainstream cloud providers.

Who Should Use Proton Drive?

Proton Drive is best for people who care more about privacy than maximum storage for the lowest price, especially good for storing personal documents, private photos, identity files, financial records, family archives, work files and sensitive shared folders. It’s also a good fit for people trying to move away from Google, Apple or Microsoft without giving up cloud storage entirely; if you already use Proton Mail or Proton VPN, Drive is an obvious service to consider.

More caution is warranted for heavy business teams that rely on complex shared drives, deep Microsoft Office workflows, huge media archives, or specialised cloud integrations, Proton Drive can work well for smaller teams and privacy-focused users, but it isn’t yet the default enterprise file platform for every use case.

Verdict

Proton Drive is one of the best cloud storage choices for people who want privacy-first file storage without giving up everyday usability. Its encryption model is stronger than ordinary cloud storage, its metadata protection is unusually good, and its integration with Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Pass, Docs and Sheets makes it part of a much broader privacy suite.

It isn’t the cheapest cloud storage service, and it isn’t yet as mature as Google Drive or OneDrive for every productivity workflow, but it does something those services don’t do by default: it keeps your files private from the provider itself. Choose Drive Plus if you only need 200GB of encrypted storage. Choose Proton Unlimited if you also want Mail, VPN, Pass and 500GB of shared Mail and Drive storage. Choose Duo or Family if you want to move a household into the Proton ecosystem.
